Background:The Honourable Gordon L. Bennett, O.C., M.Sc., D.C.L., L.L. D. was born in Charlottetown on October 10, 1912. He was a graduate of Prince of Wales College (one of UPEI's predecessor institutions) and holds both a B.Sc. and a M. Sc. degree in Chemistry from Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. In 1976 he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Civil Laws from Acadia and in 1980 the degree of Doctor of Laws from the University of Prince Edward Island. In 1983 he was named an Officer of the Order of Canada. Mr. Bennett served Prince of Wales College as a teacher, registrar, and coach of several athletic teams. AS Minister of Education in 1969, he piloted through the PEI Legislature the law creating UPEI. As Lieutenant-Governor, he was proud to serve also as Visitor to the University. And, from 1985 to 1992, he was UPEI's fourth Chancellor. These involvements only hint at the ways in which Gordon Bennett was a life-long partisan of the University.
