| Background: | The Honourable R. Lloyd G. MacPhail C.M., Prize has been established at the University of Prince Edward Island by his family to create a lasting memorial to a gentle, community-spirited man, and a loving husband and father. This award is created in respect of Mr. MacPhail=s encouragement and support of individuals pursuing an education.
Mr. MacPhail was born on March 22, 1920. He was educated at his local school in New Haven and at Prince of Wales College. Having built the family business over three decades to include a farm supply business and general store, Mr. MacPhail was elected to the PEI Legislative Assembly in 1961. An excellent mathematician, he served as Minister of Finance and Finance critic for the Official Opposition. Mr. MacPhail remained active in politics until his appointment as Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island
in 1985, a post he served with distinction until his retirement in 1990.
Mr. MacPhail was keenly involved in his community and church and remained an ardent fan of the UPEI Hockey Panthers. He passed away on July 2, 1995 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown. |
