Description:Awarded to the full-time PEI student majoring in Sociology, Anthropology, or Sociology/Anthropology who is entering fourth year who attained the highest overall average in his/her previous 20 courses, and who is not receiving any other UPEI scholarship.

Background:Dr. Clarence J. Murphy (1911-1986) was born in Montague, PE. He received Bachelor of Arts from SDU in 1934 andreceived both M.A. and Ph.D. from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He taught at John CarrollUniversity in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1942, he joined the faculties of SDU and PWC, and in 1945 was appointedCarnegie Professor of Economics and Sociology at both institutions. He then joined Department of Sociologywhen UPEI was formed and taught until his retirement in 1 974. Throughout his teaching career he participatedextensively in university affairs, serving as Department Chairman and as a member of The Board of Governorsand Senate, and was active in the co-operative and credit union movements in PEI. The family of Dr. Clarence J. Murphy established this award in his memory.
