Athletic Physicals

UPEI Student Health CentreThe Student Health Centre collaborates with the Sports Centre each year to provide health assessments for rookie varsity athletes. A health assessment is required to prove fitness to play in the AUAA. Each year these assessments are arranged with the coaches and Sports Centre staff for specific dates and times. If you are a rookie athlete, please check with your coach for the assigned date for your team.

Birth Control Counselling and Guidance

UPEI Student Health CentreThe physicians and nurses of the Health centre provide counselling, guidance and education on the various methods of birth control.

 

 



Community Referrals

UPEI Student Health CentreCommunity referrals are essential to the maintenance of health and offer additional services that can not be offered through the Health Centre. Depending on your needs, the nurse can assist you in locating organizations, that will meet and work with you to improve or enhance your present health.

Emergency Contraception

Emergency contraception (morning after pill) can be taken up to 72hrs following unprotected intercourse to prevent pregnancy. The morning after pill can be used in the case of unprotected sex, ripped condom or misused pills. The Health Centre offers counseling, education and prescriptions. Emergency contraception can also be dispensed by a pharmacist without a prescription

Immunizations

UPEI Student Health CentreThe Student Health Centre offers several faculty specific immunization programs Hepatitis B for nursing, and Rabies for AVC.

Immunizations for students planning to travel are available at the Travel Immunization Clinic (629-8846, 191 Grafton Street).

UPEI Student Health CentreInjections

Medications required to be given by injection (ex: Depo Provera, Vitamin B12, allergy injection or Iron) can be performed by the nurse by appointment.

 

Medical Assessments and Treatment

UPEI Student Health CentreThe nurses, physicians, and administrative staff at the Student Health Centre work collaboratively to provide holistic, well-coordinated care to students. Depending on your health needs, our administrative staff will book you to see the nurse or physician to be assessed.

Medical Referrals

All students, both international and provincial, can receive referral consultations from local specialists. If medically necessary the Health Centre physicians can arrange a referral to the appropriate provider and/or receive special tests, i.e. x-rays, physiotherapy, blood collection procedures, etc....

Men’s Health

UPEI Student Health CentreThe Health Centre provides care addressed at the diverse need’s of the men’s health on campus. This includes, reproductive care, education on sexual health, self testicular exams and all other needs presented by the student. “Men’s Health Educational” sessions are held within the UPEI residence each fall by a physician, please contact the Health Centre for more information.

Pregnancy Testing, Support and Education

UPEI Student Health CentreThe health centre provides support for those students who become pregnant, as well as education and specialist referrals. Pregnancy tests are also available. Information and councelling regarding options is available. The Student Health Centre is a safe, strictly confidential place to come for help and support.

Prescriptions

UPEI Student Health CentreA frequently asked question at the Health Centre is "Can I obtain prescriptions at the Health Centre?" The answer is “Yes”. The physician will write a prescription that must be taken to a pharmacy to be filled. Please note, local pharmacies can not fill prescriptions written by physicians from other provinces and/or countries. Make an appointment at the Student Health Centre to have a physician here write the required prescriptions.

Another frequently asked question is "Are my prescriptions paid for under my student health care plan?" The answer again is “Yes”. However, this applies to only specific medications. Should you have questions related to medication coverage, please contact the Student Union health plan administrator for further details.

Sexually Transmitted Infection Screening, Counseling and Education

Physicians and nurses at the Health Centre can provide screening (swabs, urine and blood testing), counseling and education regarding sexually transmitted infections. Such as, HIV, syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhea, hepatitis B & C, genital herpes and genital warts (HPV).

Women’s Health

UPEI Student Health CentreThe Health Centre offer services aimed at the unique needs of the female students. Including physical exams, education on various topics, such as, contraception, sexually transmitted illnesses, menstrual concerns, breast self-exams, pregnancy testing, annual pap-smear and all other concerns presented by the students.
