What is a student exchange?
While the term can be applied to many types of programs, the exchanges managed by the Department of Student Services, are a set of programs where UPEI students can pursue UPEI credited studies, at UPEI tuition rates, at one of our partner institutions. Students from these partner institutions also come to study at UPEI.
Where can I go on exchange?
The Department of Student Services maintains exchange agreements with institutions in Australia, Egypt, Japan, Korea, Sweden, and the United States. Many faculties and departments also maintain program-specific exchanges to many other countries.
Who can go on exchange?
University policy targets students going into their third year for exchange. However, particularly strong second-year students have also been accepted. You must be prepared to complete another full academic year of study after you return from exchange, which is why fourth-year students are not offered exchange opportunities. We also have a screening process to ensure that strong students who are academically and personally well-prepared to represent the University, and their country, are sent.
How can I learn more?
We publish an exchange handbook that you can access online here. It offers more information on the exchange hosts and the application process. You can also see a listing (along with links) of our exchange partners.
But the country I’ve always wanted to visit isn’t on your list.
You may want to see if your faculty offers exchange opportunities to other regions. Our staff would be happy to talk to you about other study abroad and internationalization opportunities. We are always looking for new ideas for exchanges. If you think of a location that might be appealing to students, let us know and we’ll be happy to explore the possibility.
So, who do I talk to?
Currently, Sherilyn Acorn in the School of Business Administration is our contact person for students interested in exchanges. You call her at (902) 894-2837, or send her an e-mail.
