Volunteer experience provides individuals with valuable experience both personally and professionally.  Many graduate level programs and work opportunities seek indivduals with a background of volunteer experience.  These experiences often allow individuals to develop many transferable work skills that can be very useful in an educational program and/or work setting.  Not only does volunteer work help many people to develop professionally, but these experiences also may serve as a means for individuals to grow and develop personally through discovering more about themselves, in terms of interests, values, skills, and personal needs.
