The following scholarships are available to UPEI graduates who are proceeding to graduate or professional studies. Unless otherwise specified, application forms and details are available from Student Advocacy and Support Services, Department of Student Services, in early May. All applications, along with a copy of the acceptance letter for the relevant graduate studies program, must be returned to Student Advocacy and Support Services, Department of Student Services, by the end of July. Except where indicated, recipients are selected by the Scholarships and Awards Committee.
Biology or Chemistry
The Minto and Vina Foster Graduate Scholarships in Biology
These scholarships will recognize academically deserving graduate students who conduct research in disciplines related to gardening as it pertains to economically important plants. Students must be and have been residents of Prince Edward Island during their entire lives.
The Janet Lovering Graduate Scholarship in Science
This scholarship is for a full-time student entering the first year of the Master of Science program in Biology or Chemistry at UPEI. The candidate will have an undergraduate record of distinction.
The Dr. Leon Loucks Graduate Scholarship in Chemistry
This scholarship will be granted to a graduating Chemistry Major or Honours student with high academic performance who has excelled in the senior Majors or Honours research project, and who is expecting to attend or has been accepted for study to one of the following: a Masters program at UPEI or other university; or a professional program, including the Atlantic Veterinary College, a school of medicine, dentistry or pharmacy. The recipient will be determined based upon recommendation from the Dean of Science.
Dr. Robert Haines Graduate Research Award in Chemistry
This research award in Chemistry will be granted to a graduate student of the University of Prince Edward Island who is pursuing graduate research in Chemistry.
Environmental Studies
The Ernest E. and Gertrude Annear Poole Memorial Scholarship
A research scholarship will be granted to a graduate student within the Faculty of Science studying Environmental Sciences: Watershed Integrity.
Family and Nutritional Sciences
The Elizabeth Cousins Large Memorial Scholarship (Deadline: mid-December)
This scholarship is open to a UPEI graduate who has been accepted for graduate study in Home Economics or a related field, or to any student entering the Junior or Senior year in the Family and Nutritional Sciences Program at the University of Prince Edward Island. Applicants must have superior academic standing combined with a demonstrated concern for others. Please note: the deadline for this award is mid-December and application forms are available from the Chair of the Selection Committee, Department of Family and Nutritional Sciences, Dalton Hall, in early November.
The Mrs. W. Chester S. McLure Awards for Dietetic Internship (Deadline: April 1)
These awards are presented to two students who are enrolled in, or have been accepted into, any year of the Integrated Dietetic Internship program at the University of Prince Edward Island. The awards are based on the following:

Business Administration/Political Studies
The W. Chester S. McLure Memorial Fellowship
One or more university fellowships are available for a graduating student or students from UPEI to assist such graduating student or students to continue his or her studies in the field of Business Administration or Political Science, preferably at one of the following universities:
Master of Business Admission
The George E. Howatt Scholarship
This MBA entrance scholarship will be awarded to a student entering the UPEI MBA program. Selection criteria to be: academic record, professional accomplishments, demonstrated leadership ability, and interview (potentially).
MBA Entrance Scholarship
Five entrance scholarships will be awarded annually to incoming MBA students at the UPEI School of Business Administration. Each scholarship is valued at $5,000 and at least one scholarship will be awarded to an international MBA student.
Dentistry
The Dr. L. I. Duffy Memorial Award
This award is for a student proceeding to professional studies in Dentistry.
Law
The Joseph A. Ghiz Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship, in memory of the Honourable Justice Joseph A. Ghiz, is awarded annually to a full-time graduating UPEI student with high academic standing who has demonstrated an aptitude for commitment to the community and has been accepted into an accredited law school the following academic year.
The Honourable Justice Mark R. MacGuigan Memorial Scholarship

Master of Arts in Island Studies
The Bill and Denise Andrew Scholarships in Island Studies (Scholarship Application Form)
These scholarships will be awarded annually to students studying in the Master of Arts in Island Studies progam at UPEI.
Erwin and Joyce Andrew Memorial Scholarship (International Island)
Student undertaking thesis research that proposes to focus on, singly or comparatively, one or more islands that are not in Canada will be eligible to compete for the International Island award. Students are not eligible if they: are in receipt of an award in excess of $2,000 at the time of application; are a full-time UPEI employee; and/or have not completed at least three of the core MAIS courses.

Medicine
The Dr. Lorne Bonnell Bursary
This bursary is awarded annually to a student proceeding to professional studies in Medicine. It is preferable that the candidate’s birthplace be PEI and that she/he be a resident of King's County or Southeastern Queens/Wood Islands/Belle River.
The Lorne and Ruby Bonnell Scholarship Fund
This scholarship is awarded to a student graduating from the University of Prince Edward Island and who has been accepted at a Canadian university for advanced study in the physical sciences.
The Arlie-Parks Scholarship - In Memory of Dr. Kenneth MacIntyre
This scholarship, in memory of Dr. Kenneth MacIntyre, is awarded to a graduating UPEI student who has been accepted for the study of Medicine at a university, medical school, or college, and who, in the opinion of the President and Academic Vice-President of the University of Prince Edward Island, is qualified for that purpose.
Music
The Lena Caroline McLure Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a UPEI student, graduating from the School of Music, preferably whose major is Voice, and who intends to pursue post-degree study in Music Education or Performance.
Nursing
The Janet Lovering Scholarship of Graduate Study in Nursing (Deadline: June 1)
This scholarship was first awarded in the fall of 2001 and is available to a graduate of the UPEI School of Nursing who has been admitted to a graduate studies program in Nursing. The scholarship may be awarded for up to two years to the same person. Please note: candidates must apply to the Dean of the UPEI School of Nursing by June 1. The application must include:
The Michael Robison Memorial Scholarship for Nursing
Each year, an award of $1,000 will be given to a Registered Nurse, preferably a graduate of the UPEI School of Nursing, and preferably an individual who intends to work on the Island. The successful candidate will have a particular interest in the impact of heart disease on individuals and/or families, and his/her work will enhance community support for families of cardiac patients. Applicants must be enrolled in a baccalaureate or graduate Nursing program and not already receiving an award of more than $1,000.
The Dr. Vera Elizabeth Dewar Postgraduate Nursing Scholarship
This scholarship will be awarded to a graduate of the UPEI School of Nursing pursuing a master’s degree in Nursing or a doctoral degree in Nursing. Preference will be given to candidates in a PhD (Nursing) program.
The Bill and Denise Andrew Preceptor Scholarships
Two scholarships will be awarded annually to nurses who have served as preceptors with the UPEI School of Nursing for a minimum of two years, and who are continuing education in the healthcare profession.
Gerontology
The International Year of Older Persons (IYOP) Award for Postgraduate Studies in Gerontology
Awarded to a post-graduate student for studies in gerontology at the University of Prince Edward Island. The goal is to educate people in the field of gerontology and to leave a permanent legacy of IYOP Year to the people of Prince Edward Island.
Psychology
The Julian Jaynes Memorial Graduate Award in Psychology
This award is available to a UPEI graduate who has been accepted as a candidate for graduate studies in Psychology. Graduates must apply for this award, providing evidence of acceptance from the university where they will be studying, and a transcript of their undergraduate marks.
Radiography
The GE Award (QEH Radiography Courses)
Awarded to a graduating student who has completed the Bachelor of Science in Radiography program with the highest average in the QEH designated courses.
Sister Noreen Hammill Award for Professionalism
This award is granted to a graduating student who displays enthusiasm for the profession, exhibits empathy and concern for the patient, demonstrates warmth and confidence, is professional in grooming, dress and work ethic.
General
The I.O.D.E. War Memorial Doctoral Scholarships
These scholarships, valued at $15,000, are available to Canadian citizens who already hold a degree from a recognized Canadian university. At the time of application, a candidate must be enrolled in a program at the doctoral level or equivalent. The appointment is subject to cancellation if the winner does not continue to show high academic and personal qualities. The Hooper/Klarenbach Research Graduate Scholarship
This scholarship is open to exceptional Canadian and non-Canadian candidates with a BSc, MSc, or DVM degree (or equivalent) who are pursuing a new graduate program (MSc or PhD) in Neuroscience at UPEI. Candidates should be available to register for a full-time graduate program in either the Faculty of Science or the Atlantic Veterinary College at the University of Prince Edward Island between May 2007 and March 15, 2008. The annual award provides $12,000 toward the expenses of the student. The Scholarship is renewable for one year, dependent on satisfactory progress.
The Thunder Cove Breast Cancer Graduate Research Scholarship
This annual scholarship will be granted to a UPEI graduate research student conducting breast cancer research at UPEI.
Bob & Priscilla Bordon Scholarship for Graduate Research (PTSD)
This scholarship is for a graduate student of the University of Prince Edward Island who is interested in studying post-traumatic stress disorder (PSTD).
The Hon. Dr. M. Lorne Bonnell Memorial Scholarship for Graduate Studies in Health Sciences
This scholarship is for a full-time student, who is a Canadian citizen, entering the first year of a Master of Science program in either the Faculty of Science or the Atlantic Veterinary College at the Unviersity of Pricne Edward Island.
The Dr. John H. Maloney Scholarship in Science/ Business
This award will be given to a graduate student in the Faculty of Science, who is conducting post-graduate research activity at UPEI. The Dean of Sciene will make his/her recommendation based upon advice received from the Graduate Studies Committee of the Faculty of Science. In "even" numbered years, this award will be given to a student in the Faculty of Business.
